Brookline, Massachusetts: Powering the Transition to Electric Vehicles

Nestled just west of Boston, Brookline is a historic and culturally vibrant town known for its leafy streets, charming neighborhoods, and status as the birthplace of President John F. Kennedy. While it offers a suburban feel, Brookline remains closely integrated with the urban fabric of nearby Boston, making it a prime location for forward-thinking civic initiatives.

Advancements in Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

Brookline has made significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure to support both public use and municipal operations. As part of a broader push to modernize and reduce emissions, the town has steadily increased access to EV chargers in key locations.

A major milestone was the completion of EV infrastructure and charger installations at the Brookline Town Hall lot and garage at 333 Washington Street. Maverick Electric Vehicle Services led this project, beginning construction in 2023 and installing fifteen ChargePoint CPH50 12kW Level 2 chargers. These chargers were specifically implemented to support Brookline’s growing electric fleet, further embedding sustainability into municipal operations.

In addition to municipal fleet support, Brookline is expanding its public-facing EV charging options. In July 2024, Maverick also installed a DC Fast Charger on the eastbound side of Beacon and Centre Streets, near the Coolidge Corner T stop—a central and high-traffic location. This Level 3 charger provides rapid charging for EV users and adds a valuable amenity for both residents and visitors navigating one of Brookline’s busiest commercial districts.

Brookline has also implemented a $0.25 per kilowatt-hour fee at town-owned charging stations to help regulate usage and fund ongoing maintenance. This pricing model aligns with the town’s commitment to responsible and scalable growth in EV accessibility.

Looking ahead, Brookline is taking a proactive approach to meet ambitious climate goals. With an eye on achieving zero emissions by 2040, the town is exploring bold initiatives such as restrictions on gas-powered vehicles and significant expansion of its EV charging network. Local sustainability groups are also stepping in, offering residents resources and guidance on electrifying their homes and vehicles.

The efforts in Brookline—combined with projects like those led by Maverick Electric Vehicle Services—demonstrate how public-private collaboration can accelerate a town’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable transportation solutions. As infrastructure expands and awareness grows, Brookline is poised to remain a leader in municipal and community-level EV adoption.
